Pope Gregory (also known as Pope Gregory the Great) declared that Mary of Magdala was a prostitute in the year 591 common era. This is not true. During a famous sermon delivered on September 14, 591 CE, Pope Gregory lumped together three separate women mentioned in the Gospels in the New Testament of the Christian Bible into a single composite female figure.
There are many “Mary’s” in the Bible. Mary the mother is Jesus comes to mind. She was not one comingled into “Mary Magdalene” the prostitute. The three women Pope Gregory melded into one person are:
1.Mary of Magdala a prominent disciple of Jesus, healed of 7 demons who financially supported Jesus ministry.
2. The unnamed sinner who wept at Jesus feet and anointed Jesus feet with expensive perfume presumed to be Myrrh. Pope Gregory apparently assumed this sins she had committed were of a physical/sexual nature.
3. Mary of Bethany is the sister of Martha and Lazarus. When Jesus visited the home of these dear friends, Mary chose to sit at Jesus feet and listen to his teaching leaving her sister, Martha, to prepare the meal for everyone by herself.
These three women are considered to be the 3 women, Mary’s, misidentified by Pope Gregory in a sermon. However, there were other prominent Mary’s in Jerusalem at the time Jesus of Nazareth walked the hills of Jerusalem and went to the second Temple there when required. There is another “Mary of Magdala” who was a seller of purple and taught men in the temple. The only woman I know recorded to teach men in the temple. Jesus met her. Fell in love with her and married her according to the biblical commandment in Genesis to be fruitful and multiple. If a boy reached the age of 20 and had not married yet, he could be compelled to marry. Jesus of Nazareth was no different. Jesus and the Mary from Magdala who was the seller of purple in the temple and teacher of men in the temple were married. Their ketubah is on file in Jerusalem.
